Catalina Island

In the early 60s I took a road trip to California with my Parents and went on a tour boat to Catalina Island (where this photo was snapped).  Daddy had told me for years about growing up in LA and going over to Catalina to ride horses, swim and fish.  I wanted to see a part of his childhood through my eyes.  I wasn’t expecting to fall in love with Avalon, nor for years having daydreams of living there, escaping the pitfalls of teenage life and the woes of the world around me.  Avalon was a setting out of a Romantic novel with the arc of the bay circling swirling around the town.  So many years ago and yet my heart feels like it was only yesterday.

The Heart Sings - LOTD at Digtials!!

My wonderful friends at Digitals have just named this page LOTD! Thanks everyone.

It is a joy beyond words to watch a new one enter our world, when you are approaching your 99th birthday the joy is even greater. Great Grandma Coulter has waited with open arms to hold Brynn Fyona. As I watched Brynn, not even a week old, reach up towards this beautiful woman, my heart swelled knowing that in the innocence of childhood a baby knows instinctively whose arms hold unconditional love.

Ordinary Day, Extraordinary Lady

Here's Momma last month when I visited. Isn't it a wonderful photo of her??? I did this for the Let's Talk About Challenge this month at Digitals. You were to create a layout and use a definition in it. My definition was age:

age -- noun, verb, aged, ag-ing.

Why is it Momma when I look at this picture I can’t seem to find the right age, at least not the age that fits the years you’ve been here. To me you are just you, the Momma that answers my questions, helps me solves my problems and always encourages me when I’m down. So age really isn’t a number is it? It’s more a perception of life.

I used this new kit from Glenda Ketcham called Ordinary Day Layered Quickpage. It's sort of a mini kit and QP all rolled into one. I also incorporated things from a couple of her other kits in the page, check out my gallery page at Digitals for a full list of supplies.

New Pages

Here are a few pages I've been working on the last few days. The first one is Zoie and Angi at the beach in summer 2000 using Joyce de Jonge's Fairy Dust kit.



The next is the day Mitch and Jeanett got married in 1998. Love the look on Derik's face. And it is Nicole in the pic not Beth, I have to change that on the final copy.
This was using Serendipity from Silvia Romeo at Digitals.




Next is my great-great niece, Alyssa when she was visiting Carol this summer and we happened to be there. I just loved this candid shot of her discovering her shadow. It's so much more fun when they don't know you have the camera in hand. I like the little saying I came up with. This is made using a brand new kit from Alessandra Designs at Digitals called Ethereal Fantasy. Such a wispy, soft, dreamy kit, I love it!





And last is Silvia's other new kit called Citrus Delight. This is Momma, they snapped this fast before she could object. Who would have known she'd look so cute in a hat. Aren't the colors in Silvia's kit perfect with the photo of Mom. What fun is Digital Scrapbooking!

We Missed you at Sunday School

I know these things don’t quite go together but it was the age I was trying to show you here. The post card on the left was from Momma’s Sunday School wondering where she was, and why she was missing, it’s dated 1919. Momma would have been 8. The photo above of Momma and Uncle Kiehl has a hand written scribble on the side saying about 1919. So this is Momma in that same year. Such a cute little girl, and Uncle Kiehl, my goodness he was adorable even then. Of course I always had such a soft spot for him. What I see today in 2008 is how much Zoie looks like her Grandma, I don't’ think I’d seen this before. I see the features passed from generation to generation, I’ve written about that before but I’d never seen Momma in Zoie.

Oh my goodness this is the same age Mom talks about Grandma Moran putting these two on a train from Yakima to Walla Walla to visit Auntie. Mom says she was probably 7 or 8 and Uncle Kiehl was 3 years younger. Uncle Kiehl threw his hat out the window when they were stopped and Mom being the big sister ran out the train car around the train and grabbed the hat. She said the conductor helped her back on but the train was ready to go when she got on. We figured it must have been a full days ride back then considering it takes 2 1/2 hours by car now. This would have been 1918 or 1919. She said part of the ticket included a box lunch.

This was just a story when Mom was telling me but thinking about these two little tykes on a train alone, oh my goodness, it scares me to death. Things were so different back then, Everyone watched out for everyone else. They must have made it just fine, no damage done, but Zoie is 9 this year and to send her and Pyper, just about the same ages as here, alone on a whole day’s train trip just is beyond my comprehension. Times have really changed and the world is most certainly not the same as it was here!

I used papers and elements from Silvia Romeo's Tea and Sympathy kit (the mat for the journaling was made with one of Silvia's papers and altered with an action from Atomic Cupcake).

Granny Goose and Me

Glenda Ketchum shared an album she just finished and I loved how she wrote the pages from the baby's perspective. When I went to do this page of Mom and Evie I thought I'd try it and was really happy with the way it turned out, besides documenting this trip they took.

Here's the Journaling:
My sister Alyssa and I (my name is Evie) live in Virginia with my Mom and Dad. Daddy is in the Navy and he has to go out on the ship, sometimes for weeks at a time so then it’s just us three girls that get to play together.

Mommy and Daddy decided we should make this big trip across the
United States to see my Grandma and Grandpa Johnson. After we broke in their house and scattered all our stuff around they took us to Longview where our Great Grandma and Grandpa Mahnke live. Wow all these Grandmas with all these hugs and kisses. I’m a really big star here in Washington, well Alyssa is too, but I’m the newest one in the family so I’ve really been getting a lot of attention.

After we played with Sparky, Great Grandmas fluffy little bundle of dog, they decided we should all go see another Grandma, how many can a girl have I wonder? This time it was to see Great Great Grandma Coulter, sure are a lot of Greats in her name! My Grandma always calls her Granny Goose and I think I kinda like that name too, so from now on she’s going to be my Granny Goose who lives in Washington. They say Granny is old, she’s 96 but I don’t think she looks old. She can still hold me in her lap and hug me and play with me, so that’s not old, I don’t think they know what they’re talking about.

We sure do have a BIG family in Washington, my Auntie Krysta that’s my Mommy’s sister) still lives in Vancouver with Grandma and Grandpa. Then there all these other Uncles and Aunts and they all have that Great name in front of theirs again, it’s so confusing for someone my age.

I think I’ve decided I like them all and they all seemed to like me too!

Journaling Reads:
Mom and Dad, had five children, one who passed early in life. They worked hard, in the early years raising pigs, chickens and cows. They had huge gardens to provide food for the year, milk and cream from the cows and chickens well I can still remember the block for the chickens demise in the back yard, icky! Hard working people who cared for their family with all they had and cared for each other with a special kind of love that lasted over 50 years.

Momma

I did this for the October Sketch Challenge at Digital Scrapn. I used Lori Giles new kit called Once Upon a Time.
I love working with Lori's things, she is just so artistic. This time I used one of her overlays, it was black and didn't work with the page, so I took this beautiful background paper she'd made that had some reds and greens in it and merged it with the overlay. Wow unbelievable effect. There is just so much you can do with PS I wish I knew it all, lol!

The Pout!

I did this page for the August Lets Talk About Challenge at Digitals where you were to try and use conversation within your page. I had just gotten this photo of Mom and talked to her yesterday about it so it seemed a perfect match.

Journaling Reads:
Momma is now 96. She recently took a ride to visit my Aunt Hulda and while their her nieces, Renie and Donna Lee, showed her vintage photos that they were scrapping. Momma looked at this picture and instantly said "I told them I didn't want my picture taken" so they "got a pout". Isn't it amazing what 90 plus years later the mind remembers?

Last evening while chatting on the phone I told her "I have this wonderful photo of you Renie sent me after you left yesterday". Her response, "Oh yes me sitting on the stoop, and my pout, well that's what they got". You gotta love her!

Momma has never like her picture taken. I have lots of side views, hands over face, downward casts but I didn't realize it went clear back to childhood. And I wonder why someone so pretty would not want their picture taken!

I used Maddy Fernandez's Treasure Chest another perfect match to go with Mom's picture. It's a great kit with lots of vintage items like these chests and rich warm browns. I love it.
